2021 Tesla Model Y vs. 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E: a high-voltage battle!
2021 Tesla Model Y vs. 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E: a high-voltage battle!
Posted on March 17, 2021
Since its inception on July 1, 2003, the Tesla has simply revolutionized the automotive world. In fact, it is the Palo Alto manufacturer that is partly responsible for the current craze for electric vehicles, mainly thanks to its Model S. On the strength of its success, Tesla has developed a real model lineup. Its latest vehicle to date, the Tesla Model Y, is an all-electric sport utility vehicle that offers state-of-the-art features which place it among the best in the class.
However, things are likely to change dramatically with the new 2021 Mustang Mach-E, a Ford sport utility vehicle, which recently went into production (2020!) as a 2021 model year. With its sporty design and sharp performances, it has every reason to take the segment’s crown!
440 Ford, your Ford dealer located in Laval, on the North Shore of Montreal, tells you why the 2021 "Mach-E" is a better choice than the Model Y in this 2021 Tesla Model Y vs. Ford Mach-E comparison!
Very similar lines to the Model 3 for the Tesla, and inspired by the Mustang for the Mach-E
First round of this Tesla Y vs Mustang Mach-E face-off, the design. On this point, given the physique of the two title contenders, one would think that each of them is simply a raised version of the models from which they take their inspiration, namely the Model 3 for the Tesla, and the iconic Ford Mustang for the Mach-E.
However, this is only true for the 2021 Tesla Model Y, especially on its front end. With its plunging ribbed hood, and especially its headlights very similar to those of the compact electric Tesla, identifying the 2021 Tesla Model Y from the latter is not easy! This first impression is also confirmed from the side, where the roof line strongly resembles that of its smaller sibling. The relatively low ground clearance of the Tesla SUV only reinforces the feeling of having to deal with a higher Model 3 on legs.
For the 2021 Ford Mach-E on the other hand, it is quite different. The influence of the legendary Ford Mustang on the Mach-E's features is undeniable, but the Ford electric SUV has a personality all its own. While the headlights have some of the same styling cues as the blue oval sports car, they're different, as are the taillights, which are also based on the Ford sports coupe's three vertical stripes, but with an additional edging on the inside of the stripes. Add to that a shorter rear end than on the Mustang and a ground clearance that's much greater than on this one, and you get an SUV that pays tribute to this legend in the most beautiful way, while having its own temperament! What is more, with colorful shades like Lucid Red or Infinite Blue, you can further sublimate the lines of the Mach-E while shaping it in your own image.
Thus, the Ford electric SUV, with its character-filled lines, naturally stands out at the end of this first round in the Tesla Y vs Mustang Mach-E match in Laval, on the North Shore of Montreal!
More power for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E against the 2021 Tesla Model Y!
Second round of this "2021 Tesla Model Y vs Ford Mach-E" comparison: the technical specificities, which are the true crux of the matter among electric vehicles at the moment.
Power to spare on the Model Y...
On the Tesla side, you will be able to choose between three powertrains. The first, called "standard range" for its battery, will give you a driving range of 393 km (EPA estimate) and especially an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, all for a top speed of 217 km/h.
However, the power is transmitted only to the rear wheels, meaning a rear-wheel drive. For more sportiness, you'll have to turn to the 2021 Tesla Model Y Performance. With its two-engine all-wheel drive system, it will provide you with a combined power of 456 hp. Range is also improving, with 488 km (EPA figures).
But to get the longest possible range for the Tesla SUV, which is 525 km (EPA), you'll have to opt for the Long Range AWD version. Also equipped with a dual engine, it offers a 0–100 sprint in 5.0 seconds thanks to its combined 384 hp, for an identical top speed to the standard version (217 km/h).
... Which is still not enough to beat the Mach-E, which offers more horsepower!
Now it's Ford's turn! Once again, you will have three engine choices available for the Mach-E, starting with the Select and Premium models. Featuring a 75.7 kWh battery and a rear-wheel drive system, it delivers 266 horsepower! The range here will be 370 km. For the other versions with all-wheel drive and the same battery, the range is reduced to 340 km.
The intermediate version, called "California Route 1", has a 98.8 kWh battery. The range naturally jumps to 475 km, as does the power output, which increases to 290 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The drivetrain is still a rear-wheel system.
However, for the best performance on the 2021 Mach-E, you'll have to choose either the 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition or the Premium First Edition. For each of them, the output increases to 480 horsepower. Both come standard with all-wheel drive and offer a decidedly fiery performance (Premium First Edition: 0–60 mph in 4.8 seconds and a targeted range of over 425 km (EPA), GT Performance Edition: 0–60 mph in about 3.5 seconds and a range of over 375 km (EPA)).

Thus, depending on the version, the Mach-E offers more power while maintaining a very high level of autonomy! It goes without saying that if you want the ultimate in sportiness when it comes to electric SUVs, only the 2021 Mustang Mach-E will satisfy you well beyond Montreal and Laval!
Interior: similarities, but better ergonomics for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E
Finally, the best for last: the cockpit! On the last chapter of this 2021 Tesla Model Y vs. Ford Mach-E confrontation, it is clear that both models share similarities, especially in terms of the dashboard. In both cases, the latter is very clean and straight, and integrates a very large screen in its center.
However, the similarities stop there. Indeed, the advantage in terms of ergonomic controls is clearly on the 2021 Mustang Mach-E side! And that starts with the orientation of this same screen. While setup horizontally in the Tesla, it's vertical in the Ford. This has the main advantage of making the content fit over a smaller width in the Mach-E compared to the Model Y, allowing for optimal readability of the information for the driver. Similarly, Tesla seems to have seen fit to dispense with a dashboard for the driver in its electric SUV, while the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has one that is digital. Drivers will therefore have all the information about their vehicle in front of them, unlike with the Model Y!
Furthermore, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E simply offers the best in on-board technology. Wireless charger for your smartphone, panoramic roof, camera offering a 360° view, or sound system from Bang & Olufsen: the Ford electric SUV will make all your trips between Laval, the North Shore of Montreal and the rest of the metropolitan area a privileged moment!
For the third and last round of this duel, it's once again the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E that wins hands down over the 2021 Tesla Model Y!
Thus, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E is THE new king of electric SUVs. And that's final!
At the end of this 2021 Tesla Model Y vs Ford Mach-E comparison, there is no doubt about the outcome: the electric SUV with the blue oval wins! With its lines inspired by the iconic Ford Mustang while keeping its own character, its performance far above its counterpart from Tesla, and an interior with a very ergonomic design for unparalleled driving pleasure, the "Mach-E" is quite simply THE new benchmark in all-electric SUVs!
However, one must give credit where credit is due: the 2021 Tesla Model Y is an SUV that also offers very high levels of prowess, and therefore remains, in this sense, a sure value. What it offers is just below the performance offered by the Ford SUV in the Greater Montreal area!
It's for all these reasons that we think the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is a better SUV than the 2021 Tesla Model Y.
